Etymology

Ucide descends from Latin occidere, a compound of the prefix ob- (against, down) and the verb caedere (to cut, to strike, to kill). The same root caedere gave Latin many kill- and cut-related words, and it survives across the Romance and English vocabulary through borrowed terms. Italian kept the parent verb almost intact as uccidere, while Romanian shortened the initial syllable to u-.
