Etymology
Aproape descends from the Latin preposition prope, meaning near. Romanian fused the preposition a (from Latin ad, to, toward) onto prope, producing a single adverb where other Romance languages later replaced prope with different words. This is why Romanian stands apart from French, Italian, and Spanish, which use près, vicino, and cerca instead.
