Etymology
Câtva is built from cât, meaning "how much," plus the old indefinite suffix -va. Cât descends from Latin quantus, the same root behind Italian quanto and Spanish cuanto. The suffix -va appears across a whole family of Romanian indefinites, such as ceva, cineva, and undeva, turning a question word into a vague, unspecified one.
