Etymology
Oricât is a compound of ori and cât, both inherited from Latin. Cât comes from Latin quantus, meaning how much or how great. Ori is the same element seen in the disjunctive conjunction ori (or), traced to Latin hora (hour), used in alternating phrases like hora...hora (now...now) that shifted toward marking alternatives. Prefixed to question words, ori- turns them into universal or concessive forms: cât (how much) becomes oricât (however much, no matter how much).
