Etymology

Romanian borrowed "soldat" from French "soldat" and Italian "soldato" in the 19th century, when the language was absorbing Western Romance vocabulary. The Italian word comes from "soldare", meaning to pay wages, itself from "soldo", a coin, which traces to Latin "solidus", a gold coin used to pay Roman troops. A soldier was, at root, simply a man who received pay.
