Etymology

Tensiune entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized the language's vocabulary. It comes from French tension, itself from Latin tensio, tensionem, the noun of tendere, meaning to stretch. Romanian adapted the French -ion ending to the native-feeling suffix -iune, the same pattern seen in pasiune and acțiune.
