Etymology
Romanian "afară" comes from Latin "ad foras," a phrase built from the preposition "ad" (to, toward) and "foras" (out of doors, outward), the accusative plural of "foris" (door, opening). The original sense was literally "to the doors" or "outward," and it settled into the general Romanian adverb for "outside." The same Latin root "foris" produced parallel words for "outside" across the Romance languages.
