Etymology
Arest entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of legal and administrative vocabulary, reinforced by both French arrêt and German Arrest, which both denote a stop or a holding action. Both trace back to Latin ad- plus restare, meaning to remain or stay behind, built on stare, to stand. In Romanian the word settled into its narrow legal sense: being held in custody by the authorities.
