Etymology
Arestat is the past participle of a aresta, which Romanian borrowed from French arrêter during the nineteenth-century push to modernize the language with French vocabulary. French arrêter goes back to Vulgar Latin arrestare, built from ad- (toward) and restare (to remain, stand firm), itself from Latin stare (to stand). English arrest reached English by the same Latin route, through Old French, which is why the two words still match so closely in form and meaning.
