Etymology

Romanian borrowed armură from French armure during the nineteenth century, when writers reshaped the language with French and Latin vocabulary. French armure descends from Latin armatura, meaning equipment or armor, which in turn comes from arma, meaning weapons or tools. The underlying idea is of things fitted together for a purpose.
