Etymology

Aprins is the past participle of a aprinde, "to light, kindle, switch on." The verb comes from Latin apprendere, a variant of apprehendere, built from ad- ("toward") plus prendere ("to seize, catch"). The underlying image is of a flame catching hold of something, the same root that gives Romanian a prinde, "to catch."
