Etymology

Așteptare is formed from the verb a aștepta, "to wait," plus the suffix -are, which turns -a verbs into feminine action nouns. Aștepta itself descends from Latin exspectare, "to wait for, look out for." The Latin cluster -ct- regularly became -pt- in Romanian, the same shift seen in lapte from lactem and opt from octo.
