Etymology

Împușcat is the past participle of the verb a împușca, which is built on pușcă, the Romanian word for gun. Pușcă was borrowed from a Slavic source related to the word for cannon, seen also in Russian. The verb literally means to hit someone with a gun, and its participle came to mean simply shot.
