Aștepta comes from Latin exspectare (also spelled expectare), meaning to wait for or watch for. Romanian regularly turns Latin ct into pt, the same change seen in lapte from lactem and opt from octo, which explains the shift from -ect- to -ept-. The initial ex- weakened over time to aș-, giving the modern form aștepta.
