Etymology
Lipsă entered Romanian from Bulgarian lipsa, a term for lack or absence current in the Balkan Slavic languages. That word goes back to the Slavic verb lišiti, to deprive or leave without. The Slavic root itself is thought to trace to the same ancient base that gave Greek leipein, to leave or be missing, the source of English words like ellipsis and eclipse.
