Etymology
Sînt is the pre-1993 spelling of the modern Romanian word sunt, the first person singular and third person plural present tense of the verb a fi, to be. Romanian inherited this form from Latin sunt, the third person plural of esse. Romanian spelling reforms shifted repeatedly between î and â for the same central vowel sound, and sînt was the standard written form for much of the twentieth century before sunt was restored as the norm in 1993.
