Word family
Etymology
Așteptat is the past participle of a aștepta, "to wait, to expect." The verb descends from Vulgar Latin adspectare (ad- "toward" plus spectare "to watch, to look"), an intensive form built on specere, "to look, to see." The sense shifted from watching for something to arrive to simply waiting for it. Italian aspettare, meaning "to wait," comes from the same Latin source and keeps a very similar shape.
