Etymology
Pregătit is the past participle of the verb a pregăti, to prepare. That verb combines the prefix pre-, from Latin prae- meaning before, with a găti, an old Romanian verb meaning to make ready or to cook, borrowed from Slavic. Over time a găti narrowed mostly to cooking, while a pregăti kept the broader sense of getting something ready in advance.
