Etymology
Romanian borrowed "departament" from French "département" in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language with French and Latin vocabulary. The French word itself goes back to the verb "départir", meaning to divide or distribute, from Latin "dis-" (apart) plus "partire" (to part, divide). The core sense has stayed stable: a portion of a larger organization, set apart for a specific function.
