Etymology

Steavă descends, like the standard word stea, from Latin stella, meaning star. Stella was itself built from an older stem related to the word for star and carried a diminutive ending. As Latin evolved into Romanian, the word contracted in most speech to stea, but some regions and older texts kept a fuller, more conservative shape, which survives as steauă or steavă.
