Etymology

Romanian borrowed "responsabil" in the nineteenth century from French "responsable", during the period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language with Latin-based vocabulary. The ending was refitted to the native Romanian neologism pattern -abil, the same pattern seen in "capabil" and "probabil". The root goes back to Latin "respondere", meaning to answer or pledge back, built from "re-" and "spondere", to pledge or vow solemnly.
