Etymology
"Daț" is a spoken, dialectal clipping of "dați", the second-person plural of the verb "a da" (to give). "Dați" itself descends from Latin "datis", the second-person plural present indicative of "dare" (to give), which also served as the plural imperative in everyday Latin speech. Romanian regularly turned Latin "-tis" into "-ți" through palatalization before the front vowel, and lost the final Latin "-s". In fast or rural speech, especially before an attached pronoun like "-mi" or "-i", the final "-i" of "dați" drops out, leaving "daț".
