Curent entered Romanian in the 19th century as a borrowing from French courant, the present participle of courir, "to run." Courir descends from Latin currere, "to run." Romanian already had a native word from the same Latin verb, a curge, "to flow," inherited directly from spoken Latin rather than borrowed later through French. Curent and a curge are therefore doublets: two Romanian words from one Latin root, arriving by different routes and centuries apart.
