Etymology
Ofertă entered Romanian in the nineteenth century from French offre and Italian offerta, part of a wave of Romance borrowings that reshaped Romanian vocabulary as the country turned toward Western Europe. Both source words go back to Latin offerre, to offer, built from the prefix ob- (toward) and the verb ferre (to carry). The word settled into Romanian mainly in commercial and administrative use, where it still lives today.
