Etymology
Încoace comes from the prefix în- (Latin in-, marking direction) joined to coace, an old adverb from the popular Latin phrase eccu(m) hac, roughly "behold, this way." The same Latin base hac ("by this way," ablative of hic, "this") produced similar directional adverbs across Romance languages. Romanian pairs încoace ("toward here") with its mirror opposite încolo ("toward there"), a system built directly on Latin demonstrative pronouns.
