Dincolo is built from din ("from") and colo, an old Romanian demonstrative adverb meaning "there, in that place," which comes from Latin illac/illoc, a locative form of the demonstrative ille. The same pattern produced dincoace ("from this side"), so the two words form a matched pair marking the far side versus the near side of something. Latin ille itself traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root for "other" or "beyond."
