Etymology

Sunet was formed in Romanian from the Latin root son-, seen in sonus (sound) and sonare (to sound), with the Romanian suffix -et. It entered common use during the nineteenth-century push to re-latinize Romanian vocabulary, alongside borrowings from French. The word replaced or stood beside older, more colloquial ways of describing noise.
