Etymology
"Pricepe" is the verb "a pricepe," borrowed from Old Church Slavonic, where a form related to "prispěti" meant "to arrive in time" or "to succeed at something." Romanian speakers shifted the sense from arriving on time to arriving at an idea, so the verb came to mean "to understand" or "to grasp." The root traces back to the Proto-Indo-European base *speh1-, "to prosper, to succeed," which also gave Latin "sperare" (to hope) and "spes" (hope). That makes "pricepe" and Romanian's own Latin-derived "spera" distant cousins that reached the language by two different routes.
