Etymology
The verb a renunța entered Romanian from French renoncer, reinforced by the learned Latin verb renuntiare, itself re- (back, against) plus nuntiare (to announce, from nuntius, messenger). The original sense was to send back word, to formally decline. Over time this narrowed to the modern meaning: to give something up by choice.
