Etymology
Atenție entered Romanian from French attention in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French borrowings that reshaped Romanian's abstract vocabulary. French attention descends from Latin attentio, a noun built on the verb attendere, meaning to stretch the mind toward something. The Latin verb itself joins the prefix ad- (toward) with tendere (to stretch).
