Etymology
Podea comes from the Romanian noun pod, which meant bridge, attic, or elevated platform, joined with the feminine suffix -ea. Pod itself descends from Latin podium, a raised platform or dais, which Latin borrowed from Greek podion, a diminutive of pous, foot. Over time the Romanian word narrowed in this derived form to mean specifically the floor underfoot inside a building.
