Etymology
Romanian "pod" comes from Latin "podium", meaning a raised platform or base. In Romanian the word narrowed to two concrete senses: the raised structure that crosses a river or road, and the raised floor space under a roof. This sets Romanian apart from most other Romance languages, which instead kept a reflex of Latin "pons, pontis" for bridge.
