Etymology
Romanian borrowed "roman" from French "roman", the word for a novel. French took it from Old French "romanz", a text written in the vernacular Romance tongue rather than in Latin. That in turn traces to Vulgar Latin "romanice", meaning "in the Roman (vernacular) manner", from "Romanicus", tied to "Roma". Because the ultimate root of "Roma" itself is disputed among scholars, no secure Proto-Indo-European root can be given.
