Perete comes from Latin paries, parietem, meaning wall. Romanian inherited the word directly from spoken Latin, unlike some other Romance languages that shifted to different roots for everyday wall vocabulary. The same Latin word gave English the technical term parietal, used for the wall-like bones of the skull. The deeper origin of Latin paries is disputed among linguists, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root can be given.
