Etymology
Zid entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic zidŭ, meaning wall, tied to the verb zьdati, to build. That Slavic verb goes back to an Indo-European root meaning to form or knead clay, the same root that gave Latin fingere, to shape. So the word links walls to the older idea of building by shaping earth or clay.
