Cărți is the plural of carte, from Latin charta, meaning a sheet of papyrus or paper. Latin took the word from Greek khartēs, itself of uncertain origin. Over time the Romanian singular carte narrowed to mean book, while the plural kept the same base and shifted its vowel to cărți through regular sound change.
