Etymology
Romanian "val" comes from a Slavic source, related to Old Church Slavonic and Common Slavic "valŭ", meaning wave or mound. Romanian absorbed many such Slavic terms in the early medieval period through contact with neighboring Slavic-speaking populations. The word kept both its concrete sense, a wave of water, and extended figuratively to mean a surge of people or events, much as English "wave" does.
