Etymology
Înaintea is built from the adverb înainte, which comes from Latin in ante, meaning roughly in front. Romanian adds the ending -a to turn it into a compound preposition that takes a genitive-marked noun. This pattern of fusing a preposition with a possessive-like article is common in Romanian, which kept more Latin case marking than other Romance languages.
