Etymology
Romanian borrowed șerif from French shérif, which itself came from English sheriff. The English word goes back to Old English scīrgerēfa, a compound meaning roughly the official (gerēfa, reeve) of a shire (scīr). Romanian took the word in relatively modern times, mainly through American Western films and news, since Romania has no office called șerif in its own legal system.
