Etymology
Bătălie entered Romanian as a borrowing from French bataille (or Italian battaglia), part of the wave of Western Romance vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 18th and 19th centuries. It exists alongside bătaie, the older word inherited directly from Latin battuere, meaning to beat or strike. So Romanian ended up with two related words: bătaie for an ordinary beating or scuffle, and bătălie for an organized military battle.
