Etymology

Romanian borrowed "bal" from French "bal", a formal dance event. The French noun comes from the verb "baller", to dance, which traces to Late Latin "ballare". That Latin verb in turn comes from Greek "ballizein", to dance or jump about. The word entered Romanian during the nineteenth century, alongside many other French cultural and social terms.
