Etymology

Niciun is a fusion of nici, a Romanian negative conjunction meaning 'nor' or 'not even', and un, the masculine indefinite article meaning 'one, a'. Nici descends from Latin nec, itself a contraction of the negator ne and the connective que. Un descends from Latin unus, 'one'. The compound spread across Romance languages to make emphatic negative determiners out of 'not even one'.
