Etymology

Rază descends from Latin radius, meaning a rod, spoke, or ray. It is part of Romanian's inherited core vocabulary, not a later borrowing. The Latin di before a vowel regularly became z in Romanian, the same shift seen in hordeum turning into orz (barley), which is why radius surfaces as rază rather than a form closer to the Latin spelling.
