Etymology
Romanian borrowed șofer from French chauffeur in the early twentieth century, as automobiles spread across Europe. The French word originally meant stoker, the person who fed the boiler on an early steam-powered vehicle. Once cars ran on internal combustion instead of steam, the word shifted to mean simply the person who drives.
