Etymology
Romanian borrowed "cancer" directly from Latin as part of the 19th-century push to re-Latinize the language's scientific vocabulary. In Latin, cancer meant both "crab" and the disease, because ancient physicians thought a tumor's swollen veins looked like a crab's legs. The word entered medical Latin from Greek karkinos, which carries the same double meaning.
