Etymology

Lipsește is the third-person singular present of the verb a lipsi, built on the noun lipsă, meaning lack or absence. Romanian took lipsă from a South Slavic source, compare Bulgarian lipsa, which itself goes back to Greek leipsis, a leaving-behind, from the verb leipein, to leave. The verb follows the same -esc/-ește pattern seen in other fourth-conjugation Romanian verbs such as a iubi, which gives iubește.
