Etymology

Dispune entered Romanian as a learned borrowing from French disposer during the 19th-century modernization of the language, when many Latin-based Romance words replaced or supplemented older Slavic and Turkish terms. It ultimately traces to Latin disponere, from dis- (apart, in different directions) plus ponere (to put, place). Romanian already had the native descendant of ponere in a pune (to put), so dispune sits alongside it as a related but separately borrowed form.
