Etymology
Casetă entered Romanian as a direct borrowing from French cassette, itself a diminutive of the older French casse, meaning box or chest. Casse traces back to Latin capsa, a container word built on the verb capere, to hold or seize. The tape-cassette sense followed the invention of the compact audio cassette in the 1960s and spread through European languages, including Romanian, along with the object itself.
