Împiedica comes from Vulgar Latin impedicare, built from the prefix im- (in) and pedica, a shackle placed on the feet, itself from pes, pedis (foot). The word passed directly into Romanian from spoken Latin, so it belongs to the oldest inherited layer of the vocabulary, not a later borrowing. The same Latin material later gave French empêcher (to prevent), by a similar path.
