Etymology

Romanian borrowed "bază" from French "base" in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian scholars reshaped the language's vocabulary along French and Latin lines. French "base" itself comes from Greek "básis" (βάσις), meaning a step or a stand, from the verb "baínein", to walk or step. "Baza" is simply "bază" plus the feminine definite article "-a", meaning "the base".
